Amygdala project

  • Kurt Van Herck (Saxophone)
  • Ruben Machtelinckx (Guitar)
  • Nathan Wouters (Double bass)

The Amygdala trio was formed at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp under the leadership of saxophone player Kurt Van Herck. In their search for music in which melody and contemplation are the key ingredients, they were influenced by the music of Tunisian oud player Anouar Brahem as well as by some old indian mantras. By combining those two styles, Amygdala succeeded in creating a very varied yet cohesive repertoire, in which tradition and innovation went hand in hand. Traditional melodies from Arabian and Indian origin were enriched with the bandmembers? own musical background and improvisational skills. As the band kept gradually evolving, they also started playing their own compositions, in which the emphasis on both melody and tranquility has remained very much alive.
